can't compile db.1.85

Like others, I am trying to install Sendmail 8.8.4 and need to install
db first. I have db.1.85 and try to compile it for DU3.2c (on Alpha
1000) but get the following error when doing a make:

cc -c -D__DBINTERFACE_PRIVATE -O -I. -Iinclude -I../../recno
../../recno/rec_clo

The script continues, but dies at the end and I don't get a db file.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks...
