Restoring a crashed system from tape

I'm new to this list and I think this has been asked here before:
How can I restore a crashed system from tape? I have a backup of all the
data areas, and the root and /usr file systems. Please give me the steps.
Do I need to install a fresh copy of DU before I can restore from tape?
