Modems: using uugetty

I have installed a couple of Practical Peripherals modems (14.4) on an
Alpha 2000 using getty and all seems to be fine, but I need to dial out
with at least one of the modems. I used uugetty with the following
inittab entry:

ttyd1:30:respawn:/usr/lib/uucp/uugetty -r -t /dev/ttyd1 M19200

This works fine, I can dial-in and dial out using kermit with no problem.

My problem is uugetty respawns the process on this modem continuously
rather than wait for a login. This causes the /var/adm/wtmp to log the
process and causes this file to grow very quickly causing the /usr
partition to reach capacity.

I set the modem to disable modem echo thinking this might be the cause of
the box not waiting for a login. This did not work.

I checked the list archives and there is very little on uugetty.

btw:

here is my inittab entry when I use getty for the same modem, this work
without a problem.

ttyd1:30:respawn:/usr/sbin/getty /dev/ttyd1 M19200 vt100

Any Ideas?

TIA
