dmu using /etc/hosts

Greetings,

/usr/sbin/dmu consults /etc/hosts for the IP address of a dmu client, so
all client addresses must be manually added to the dmu server's
/etc/hosts. Is there any reason why it couldn't be modified to use DNS or
NIS instead, providing that /etc/svc.conf also calls for DNS or NIS?

Regards,
