manual kernel configuration of TZ88 tape device

We have a new TZ88 external tape unit attached to our Alpha 2100A
server. We are running DU 3.2F.
Because of problems with our recent hardware upgrade to an
Alpha2100A, our main graphics console does not support graphics mode
anymore. A Digital FE will be coming out to examine this, but in the
meantime I want to add the correct tape device to the kernel config
file. I am unable to just run a doconfig because this tries to add
the motif windowing manager to startup. When the newly built kernel
is booted, it goes into an infinite reboot loop.
My question is: how can I determine which device special file to
use from the GENERIC config for this TZ88 unit? I would appreciate
any advice on how to manually enter the correct device number and
parameters into my server's config file.
