Printing Problems

Dear Managers,
I have a printing problem which I have been working around for quite
some time now. The scenario is this. I have several AlphaServer 2100
systems on one network. The printers, connected to terminal servers are
configured on the AlphaServers using LAT as the transport protocol. As
far as I can tell they are configured in accordance with the manuals (I
followed the examples in the Digital UNIX documentation). When a print
job is submitted, sometimes the print que seems to lock up and does not
complete the print job and the only way to clear that condition is to
down the affected print queue, clear all print jobs on that que, cycle
power on the printer and restart the que. Sometimes it is even
necessary to logout the terminal server port that the printer is
connected to. This problem occurs unpredictably and is becoming really
annoying.

I have tried replacing the printer, all associated cables, even the
terminal server and still have no solution. Is there some error of
procedure or some unknown bug in lpd or LAT? All suggestions welcome.
I shall summarise

Yours sincerely,
Robert Honore
