Thanks to Roger Joss <giarjo_at_gia.ch> for his speedy reply:

the difference between the two versions is

  /sbin/ps static linked version
  /usr/bin/ps dynamic linked version

There was a pretty comprehensive summary related to this posted by
Anne Hammond <hammond_at_solarz.Colorado.EDU> in April available in the
archives: SUMMARY: /sbin vs /usr/sbin in path.

Apparently the two commands report different counts of the pages, the
dynamically linked one including both user's and shared pages. There
may be an error in the way DU 3.2C reports RSS.
