SUMMARY: Netscape, java, DEC UNIX 4.0A

Finally, a summary for my post of a few days ago. The java problem I
described persists, and the loader error does also. Here's the original
question in light, 33% less-fat form:

On a DEC UNIX 4.0A system, netscape 3.01 returns "Sun Jan 00 00:00:00 PST 1900"
for the date in an java applet. Netscape is loading the X11R5 shared libraries
from DEC OSF/1 3.2A: libXt.so libXext.so libXm.so libXmu.so libX11.so. Also,
if I quit netscape 3.01 while an applet is running in the window, I get the
following error:

1076:/usr/local/bin/etscape: /sbin/loader: Warning: dlclose: negative
open_count for Main

Thanks to Geoffrey Kimball (kimball_at_falcon.invincible.com) for suggesting
that I (a) check the java console window in netscape. Nothing reported there
however. Geoffrey also suggested running some java applets from
www.gamelan.com - I tried a few which seemed to run fine. As an addendum, I
also took a spin around Sun's java site: www.java.sun.com, and everything
looked good there also.

Lucien Hercaud (Lucien_HERCAUD_at_paribas.com) told me how to examine a shared
library file to see what other shared objects are required (thanks Lucien!),
and in short form if anyone is interested:

"odump -Dl whatever.so"

Lucien suggested I see if libXm, libXt and libX11 (listed by odump of
libnullplugin.so) require any other 3.2A (X11R5) shared libraries. The
5 libraries listed in my question proved to be anough. After posting my
question I continued to poke around and eventually discovered that netscape 2.01
running on a DEC OSF/1 3.2A system also had the same behaviour for an applet
using Date(), but didn't share the loader error. Netscape 3.01 running on
the same system also had the Date() problem (no surprise there) and also
displayed the loader error.

So I guess that rules out a requirement for X11R5 libraries. I'm now
assuming the problem is in netscape and have sent off a query to netscape
and if anything comes of it I'll follow up here.
