I got more information after I posted my previous summary, so here is
another summary.
Thanks to the following for their further inputs:

First, the Adaptec 2940 PCI SCSI interface may not be supported under
DEC UNIX.
Second, the RAID 0+1 is a combination of striping and mirroring, to give
100% redundancy for data protection and throughput improvement through
striping. Data protection is, of course, very important, espeically
when your parts count go up; the MTBF starts going down. However, I
would think that RAID 3 should be able to give both these capabilities
at a much more efficient use of disk spindles. (This topic can get
complicated, so we can discuss it off line if anyone is interested.
But, we did choose to run a system with about 128 GB of drives in RAID 3
for high throughput and reliability.)
Third, I got a couple of recommendations for a company called
Intraserver, which makes a couple of high performance SCSI adapters of
various flavors. They may possibly be the CMD Technology equivalent for
PCI Alpha systems. I will check them out.
thanks again for all the great info.
