SUMMARY: AlphaServer 2100 -> 2100A gotchas?

The original question is attached at the end of this message.

I received responses from:

Christophe Wolfhugel <wolf_at_pasteur.fr>
alan_at_nabeth.cxo.dec.com
Karl Marble <marblek_at_ci.worcester.ma.us>
sxkac_at_java.sois.alaska.edu (Kurt Carlson)

Thanks to each of them!

All of them indicated that (as I suspected) you don't need to reinstall DU
if you're already running a recent enough version. Kurt and Alan confirmed
my suspicion that the biggest possible "gotcha" is if devices "move" after
the upgrade. Being careful to note what slots are currently occupied in
our 2100s and placing cards in the equivalent spots in the 2100A will increase
the chances of a smooth upgrade.

A full kernel rebuild after booting from the generic kernel is a Really Good
Idea (TM) too, to make sure that the config file has the correct device
entries for everything.

Kurt also echoed the upgrade manual's suggestion that I print a copy of the
settings for the firmware variables, so that it's easy to reset them after
upgrading the firmware.

Christophe indicated that the upgrade takes approximately 2 hours if the
FSE is careful.

----original question follows-------
All-
Within the next few days we'll be upgrading 2 AlphaServer 2100 4/233s (running
Digital Unix 3.2g) to 2100As. Anyone that's been through the process care
to advise me on any "gotchas" that I need to be careful to avoid?
Also, and this may be a stupid question but I have to ask, I don't really
have to (re)install Digital Unix after doing the upgrade if I'm already
running a recent enough version on the machine already, do I? (!). The
upgrade document makes no mention of this situation.
Thanks,
Tim
