Summary: Password modified in the future (late)

On the 13th Feb, I wrote about passwords being modified in the future.
Here is the summary. Sorry it took so long but illness, holiday and
projects with higher priority go in the way.

In all I received four replies (of which one was a plea for help with
the same problem). My thanks to the other three.

Pam Woods (axsymgr_at_uaa.alaska.edu) and Marie-Claude Vialatte
(mc.vialatte_at_custssv.univ-bpclermont.fr) had the same idea of modifying
the values of U_succhg and u_unsucchg in /tcb/files/auth/?/login_name.
This would work under version 3.?; but since we are using version 4.0b,
these values are hidden away in a database (/tcb/files/auth.db). Note:
the database can be checked using the command: authck -a

Randy M. Hayman (haymanr_at_icefog.alaska.edu) offered a pair of utilities
which are to be found in:

ftp://raven.alaska.edu/pub/randy/zuausr

These utilities are written to provide password management.
Unfortunately the machine I had problem with was a new firewall machine
(our first running version 4.0) and it doesn't have a C compiler, so I
am unable to try them out. They are meant to work with version 3.? as
well and I look forward to trying them out.

What I finally did was, change to Base level security (changing the root
password), rebooted, deleted /tcb/files/auth.db (to be on the safe
side), invoke C2 security again (changing the root password) and
rebooted again. After a few complains from the users about not being
able to access the Internet, it works correctly.
