Telnetting to a terminal server

I am trying to setup 'telnet remote view of accounting log' of a DECserver 700.

The DECserver 700 is attached to an Alpha 200 running D-UNIX 3.2a (tenuous
connection to this list...apologies!!)

I have followed the instructions as per the manual Decserver Network Access
Server Vol 1 - accounting 21-11

local> CHANGE PORT 8 ACCESS REMOTE
local> CHANGE TELNET LISTENER 2001 PORT 8
local> CHANGE TELNET LISTENER 2001 CONNECTION ENABLE
local> CHANGE SERVER CONSOLE 8
local> CHANGE PORT 8 AUTOBAUD DISABLED SPEED 57600

Here is the port output...

Local> show port 8

Port 8: Server: LAT_08002B94948A[K

Flow Control: XON Output Speed: 57600[K

Now, when I do

#telnet x.x.x.x 2001

I get connected and the screen 'freezes' - I don't get any messages...

There is also mention of a 'loopback connector' - what is this - yes I
really don't know!!

Any ideas where I am going wrong???

TIA

Paul
