This is a late summary - after all I first had to check if it really was
so simple as it looked at the beginning - and it was.
The new installation of DU 4.0B on an old DEC 3000-400 is straight
forward without any problems.
The only problem encountered was with the firmware upgrade. I ordered a
new SROM chip from DIGITAL (only necessary for a DEC 3000-400) and
replaced the SROM. The result of the replacement was that the machine
forgot that it was a computer (blank). The following method finally
worked:
1. Upgrade firmware to the highest secure level (6.0)
2. Replace SROM
3. Upgrade firmware to the final level (6.8)
Many thanks to Paul Henderson (henderson_at_unx.dec.com) who convinced me
to directly install 4.0 since the installation procedure has been much
simplified (graphical configuration applications) as compared with 3.x
