    Folks,

Original question:

I got many responses including seeing the same problem on a Quantum EMPIRE
2100, using disklabel -wr rz8 rzxx (which didn't work), zeroing the label
(which also hung), checking SCSI cables and termination (which seem to be ok),
and using the CDE diskconfig tool.

Dr. Tom Blinn asked:

> What does the console firmware report in response to the "show config" and
> "show dev" commands?
>
> Can the "scu" utility access the drive and retrieve the drive geometry info?
> If "scu" can't access the drive, then disklabel isn't going to work either.

Bruce Ferjulian suggested the same things to try. So I tried them.

When I power up the disk, the drive active LED goes on for a few seconds and I
*believe* I hear the disk spin up. (It's a very noisy environment.)

When I do

>>> sho device

the system finds DKB0, knows it's a fixed disk with device name ST9171N,
but the NUMBYTES field only has ...

When I boot the OS, the disk LED flashes briefly. It sounds like it is still
spun up, but scu show capacity and disklabel still fail:

scu> set nexus bus 1 target 0 lun 0
scu> show device

scu> show capacity
scu: 'read capacity' failed, EIO (5) - I/O error
scu: Sense Key = 0x2 = NOT READY - Logical unit is NOT ready,
     Sense Code/Qualifier = (0x4, 0) = Logical unit not ready, cause not
     reportable

Tech support at the vendor who sold me the device suggest the disk is broken,
but before I send it back I need to know:

Has anybody succeeded in getting this disk to work with Digital Unix? Is
there something else I need to do?
