The answer to my problem and the original question are below. Many
thanks to Guy Dallaire for giving me the name of the Oracle list:

In answer to my question, the problem was that I did not install
some crucial subsets from the DU4.0B installation disk. I went back and
installed:
Standard Programmer Commands (Software Development)
Software Development Tools and Utilities(Software Development)
Software Development Desktop Environment(Software Development)
Static Libraries (Software Development)
In the static libraries subset was the file that Oracle needed:
/usr/lib/libm.a
