Original problem was: "We have an Alpha 2100A 5/250 that has been running
NT. We want to install DU 3.2G instead. Changed os_type to UNIX. SRM
console is at 4.6-249, VSM PALcode v1.18-2, OSF PALcode v1.21-1.
"When we try to boot the CD we get a message about "processor
machine check" and the screen goes blank".
"Since I wrote the above we've tried to backlevel the firmware to
3.6 at Digital's request. Did not work. Also reinstalled 3.7 firmware and
did not work."
Thanks to Dr. Tom Blinn who wrote: "You didn't mention whether you had
re-run the ECU for UNIX . . . and also whether you checked console's "bus
probe algorithm" variable to make sure it's set correctly for V3.2G." These
were good tips but we had and it was.
Digital finally decided it must be a hardware problem and came in and pulled
i/o cards in and out without success. About the only thing left was the
video card, which was an ISA #9 GXE card with S-3 trio graphics adapter.
Replacing it with a Cirrus Logic VGA PCI card we "borrowed" that was on
site finally resolved the problem today. Digital is going to come out with
a substitute card we can keep.
