lpq from remote printer hangs network PC

We have a number of Win95 PC's connected using SAMBA to
our Alpha. They print through a Microsoft Network
connection to a queue on the Alpha, which is connected to
a remote printer (an HP Deskjet, which accepts LPD jobs).

The problem is that when the printer is busy, it doesn't
return anything from an LPQ request. This in turn means
the PCs sit expecting a return, and hang (if there is
a timeout, it's very long).

I want to get the Alpha to return a swift response (even
if it's only a faked "everything's fine") rather than waiting
for the printer. I hoped the "st" parameter in printcap
might have something to do with it, but I can't find
any documentation for it.

Any ideas?

mike.
