Escape sequences in MAN pages

Greetings,
The problem I am having is when I do a 'man' on anything I get a MAN
page output with alot of escape sequences.
When I first installed Dec UNIX 3.2d I got the standard perfectly
formated MAN pages. I ran 'catman' as root and then my problems started.
I ran 'catman' by mistake, thought I was on my Sun!!
I have not installed anything except for GCC. So I am pretty sure it is
not something that I have changed from the original OS install.

Anyone know how to fix this problem short of reinstalling the OS? I'd
look it up in the MAN pages but they're very hard to read right now. :'(

later.
