Hello.
We have just brought our DEC Alpha 2100 Usenet news server back to life
after a motherboard failure knocked us out of commission for a few days.
Since its revival, the performance our Usenet clients have been seeing
is poor. Connections are slow and response time is sluggish.
Does anyone have any pointers on how we might go about tuning the system
for Usenet news service? Is there a specific manual I should referr to?
We have over 7,800 news groups on the server, and about 50 systems
reading news during the day. Performance previously had been slow as well,
so I don't think it is a hardware thing but I expect some kernel parms
need tweeking. Netstat gives me the following:
netstat -m
574 Kbytes for small data mbufs (peak usage 599 Kbytes)
466 Kbytes for mbuf clusters (peak usage 816 Kbytes)
35 Kbytes for sockets (peak usage 89 Kbytes)
29 Kbytes for protocol control blocks (peak usage 103 Kbytes)
2 Kbytes for routing table (peak usage 2 Kbytes)
2 Kbytes for interface addresses (peak usage 2 Kbytes)
3 Kbytes for socket names (peak usage 5 Kbytes)
< 1 Kbyte for ip multicast addresses (peak usage < 1 Kbyte)
< 1 Kbyte for interface multicast addresses (peak usage < 1 Kbyte)
0 requests for mbufs denied
0 calls to protocol drain routines
1110 Kbytes allocated to network
Any hints appreciated...
