Sorry about the corrupted previous summary. I have been fiddling with
netscape 4.0b2 and I am for sure not trying again until it gets more
stable and safe.

Here's what I tried to send:

As everybody pointed out (and that was a whole big bunch of people,
thank you all):
There's NO multithreading in pre 4.x AdvFS, ie AdvFS in DEC Unix
versions earlier than 4.0 have affinity to CPU 0/boot cpu. As a direct
consequence: If you have a BIG server with lots of processors and memory
the server can be brought to its kness if you have a lot of small I/O
operations. This is caused by the I/O requests saturating the CPU that
handles AdvFS I/O (thanks, Guy Dallaire).
