SUMMARY Zip drives on alphastation

About a week ago, I've asked if it was possible to
use Iomega Zip drives on AlphaStations. I've received two answers,
which I'll summarize as follows:

        - We are only considering the SCSI version of the Zip drive
        - the Zip drive can be used as a tar device for backup/exchange
        - a disklabel can be put on the disk, but involves some trics
          (see below)
        - no one seems to have been able to use the mtools with the
          zip drive and Dec Unix.

I've looked on the Linux mailing lists and newsgroups. The newest
version of the mtools seems to support the Zip drives, but Dec Unix is
not listed in the list of OSes on which this faciliy has been tested.
The newest mtools can be found at:

        ftp://prep.ai.mit.edu/pub/gnu/mtools-3.4.tar.gz

I haven't tried any of the above, as we've decided to give the
Zip drive a miss: they're too small for what we want...

Thanks to all of those who have reponded. Here are the responses
I got, almost in full.
