recalling commands: basic Q

Since upgrading to DU 4.0a, I get only an escape sequence ( ^[[A ) when I try
to retrieve previous commands with the up arrow in a ksh, VT420 environment.
Where is this controlled? On a similar note, even back in the 3.2x days, I got
this escape sequence whenever logging on from a remote terminal.

Thanks for enduring a basic question....I'm just out of ideas on where to look.
