Cliff Krieger (ckrieger_at_latrade.com) and John Seel (johns_at_totaltec.com)
explained that recalling commands in ksh is related to the the EDITOR
environment variable. Thanks, guys! My long quest was over in a matter of
minutes!

By typing:

$ EDITOR=(vi or emacs)
$ export EDITOR

one can recall and edit commands without fc. To answer my specific question,
emacs is the editor which functions with the arrow keys. Cliff explained how
to work with vi set as the editor:

>Now your command recall functions will function like vi. Hit ESC to get
>into command mode, and then use j and k to go up and down throught the
>list of commands. Once you find the command you want, you can use h and
>l to move left and right along the line, to edit it just like in vi.

My original question:

:Since upgrading to DU 4.0a, I get only an escape sequence ( ^[[A ) when I try
:to retrieve previous commands with the up arrow in a ksh, VT420 environment.
:Where is this controlled? On a similar note, even back in the 3.2x days, I got
:this escape sequence whenever logging on from a remote terminal.
:
:Thanks for enduring a basic question....I'm just out of ideas on where to look.
