ethernet address checksum error

Hi managers,
Another unusual problem for you all today. I have a pair of 4100s
each with 3 DE500-XA ethernet cards in them. I am using DU 3.2g as the
os, and upgrading to 4.0x is not presently an option.

Occasionally, when booting, we will get a report that one of the
ethernet cards has an "ethernet address checksum error". The first time
this happened we replaced the card in question. The problem still
happens on occasion. Rebooting will invariably fix the problem. One
host has had the problem 6 times, the other has only had it happen once.
When we get this message, the interface is disabled, and is not useable.
Interfaces 0 and 1 are plugged into a Cabletron Hub, while interface 3
is in a DEChub900.

Here are the entries on Jetsam:
jetsam.latrade.com # grep checksum messages
Jan 22 13:40:00 jetsam vmunix: tu2: ethernet address checksum error
Jan 27 00:11:45 jetsam vmunix: tu1: ethernet address checksum error
Jan 29 14:25:25 jetsam vmunix: tu2: ethernet address checksum error
Feb 12 10:21:54 jetsam vmunix: tu1: ethernet address checksum error
Mar 28 22:33:26 jetsam vmunix: tu0: ethernet address checksum error
Mar 31 09:45:58 jetsam vmunix: tu0: ethernet address checksum error

and here is the one entry on Flotsam:

flotsam.latrade.com # grep checksum messages
Feb 12 10:52:32 flotsam vmunix: tu2: ethernet address checksum error

I would be intrested to see the results of a similar grep on other
machines with a similar setup. I would also like to know if anybody has
any ideas as to what causes this, what patches might be available.

DEC is willing to replace the cards each time this happens, but I
suspect that this is happening too frequently to be defective cards.

     I will, of course, summerize.

Thanks,

-cliff
