Summary: Netnews question

Thanks to everyone who responded. In each case I was advised not to delete
the history file. Instead, I was advised by several people to delete the
contents of some lesser accessed newsgroups to quickly regain some badly
needed disk space. I did this and restarted expire. I am happy to report
that I no longer have a space problem on my news disk.
