NIS and automount die when I kill SAMBA

  PROBLEM:
When I kill the PIDs for smbd & nmbd, all of the NIS processes die too.
While NIS is dead, if an automount request happens, there is no auto. maps
available, so then automount dies too.
When I restart NIS & automount, I am OK. I can start smbd & nmbd at this
point with no problems. But if I have to kill SAMBA again, NIS will die.
Any clues as to what's going on???

  SETUP:
I have two DEC Alpha-250, both have this problem.
Digital UNIX V3.2G Worksystem Software (Rev. 62).
  Both have NIS running.
One is acting as a Slave NIS server, the other is an NIS client.
  Both have this problem.
A Sun is the Master NIS server.
I have SAMBA 1.9.16p11 (latest as of Feb 28th, '97)
When I make a major change to the [global] section of the smb.conf file,
I have to kill and restart smbd & nmbd to get them to take effect.
