How do I get the cpu-id

Hello:

Does anyone know how I can get the cpu-id (ethernet address) of a machine which is all by itself on a subnet.

In the past I have rlogin'ed to a machine on the same subnet, then issued the
command "arp -a" to get the address of the machine I just logged in to.

Since the machine I want is by itself on a remote subnet the above method is not
do-able. So I need to know how to get a machines cpu-id some other way.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.
