Managers,
I asked a question the other day about shutting down a machine
with Oracle on it. In responses, a few people mentioned not to use the
shutdown command. So, I posted my response to not use it, but I am now
wondering --> If it is not good to use any of the shutdown commands to do
halting rebooting or single-user, then what is everyone out there doing
for things like shutting down at a specified time, logging the shutdown in
the binary.errlog, touching the /etc/nologin file, or broadcasting a
message to users logged in?
The shutdown script takes care of all that easily. Did you write a
script that will do each of those and then call init so that it acts like
the shutdown script?
I am really confused at why it is documented EVERYWHERE in DU
manuals to use the shutdown command - but in fact it is bad to use? What
are people doing to shut their machines down? Also, how can you reboot
using the init command? The man pages only has levels 0,s,2 and 3.
