strange sendmail problems

sendmail is exhibiting some odd behavior. mail destined to local machines
has suddenly started showing up with host name lookup failures. As an
attempt to debug the problem, I switched my primary nameserver in
resolv.conf to the secondary and vis versa. The new primary (the old
secondary) is that which belongs to our ISP. nslookups to the orginal
primary worked, sendmail just went brain dead.

any ideas?
