It seems that zip/unzip is the program to do what I needed.
Thanx to all, very simple to compile & use and even better....It worked!
Unfortunatly (but not very) zip/unzip was not on my freeware cd from DEC.

zip and unzip are available from many archives. zip is v2.0.1 and
unzip is 5.12 on my system. Newer version may be out, though.
Look for zip.2.01.tar.

Check out InfoZIP, a PKzip a-like for Unix - works like a charm.

Info-Zip, at URL:
http://www.cdrom.com/pub/infozip/Info-Zip.html
has what you need. No binaries for OSF/DGUX are provided, but
compiling the source is trivial.

Look at any major ftp site for info-zip. zip is version 1.something, and
unzip is version 5.something. Both are fully compatible with
pkzip/pkunzip. Or, ask archie for unzip (not pkunzip).

Check the DEC's weeb site Software -> Digital Unix -> Freeware -> Dec Ftp
site (
ftp://ftp.digital.com/pub/Alpha/apps/) there you will find 'zip'
and
'unzip' which are in binary format. I think those utilities produce
PKWARE
compatible zip files. But they probably do not support disk spanning
and/or
passwords on the zip files.

There is a very portable package called zip/unzip that is compatible with
pkzip. Look at gatekeeper.dec.com for the following files:
/pub/Alpha/apps/unzip
/pub/Alpha/apps/zip
/pub/Alpha/apps/zip.README
This will get you started.
There are newer versions out there that you can build that have an added
feature of forcing translation to lower case for extracted file names,
but
there are none available publically for Digital UNIX that I'm aware of.
I
did build a copy of the newer version without any problems that I
remember.

Subject: DU3.2c Version of PKZIP (or at least the PKZIP format)
I need to compress a file using the PKZIP format before using MTOOLS
to copy it to a MSDOS format diskette on an ALPHA 2100. Is there a
program that will ZIP up files (on the unix side). The client we are
sending
the disks to only have an MSDOS machine using PKZIP, So Gzip and
Compress are not an option.
Thanx
