Hi Du Admins

My question was about HP X Terms sometimes locking up when attempting
to connect to some DEC 3000-M400's running DU 3.2c

Thanks to Jude T. Cruz, Jef Hamlin, Miguel Mena and Cedric Mak for
their replies.

Jude sent some tips about solving problems with X logins.
However when this problem happens we don't even get to the login
screen so none of this applies in this case.

Jef said that ctrl-alt-del will get the terminal back after it locks
up. You have to wait a minute or so before trying it. Checking
the documentation I discovered some other possibilities: Shift-Ctrl-Break,
Ctrl-Shift-Reset, Ctrl-Shift-F4 and holding F12 down for 2 seconds.

Jef also suggested that the HP might not be releasing memory but in
our case the problem persists after the HP terminal is reset. Even
cycling the power doesn't clear it.

Miguel suggested checking /usr/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-errors. I will do this
next time the problem appears. He also very generously offered to
look at that file if I cared to send it to him.

Cedric's reply was:

We had the same kind of intermittent problem. We found out we had to
restart the xdm daemon to fix the problem.

As said, it only happens once a while with no trace why it would happen.

I'll try restarting xdm next time it happens and see if that works.

I was wondering if there is a patch for this or if an upgrade to
3.2g would fix it. So far I haven't managed to find a patch.
The 3.2g release notes mention maintenance for xdm but don't give
any details.

Thanks again
Ian
