Hi!
Thanks to Tom Webster, Craig I. Hagan, Gerdt Specht and rnfronk_at_llnl.gov
(sorry, there was no name in the e-mail).
My orignal question was:
> Has someone successfully installed a HP 500 or a HP 500 C under Digital
> UNIX 4.0? We connected the printer to our computer on LPT1 and we are

Tom Webster responded:
HP deskjets can be a real pain in the read to get working with UNIX. If
you are connecting it to your LPT port, I would strongly advise that you look
at the aps print filter package
http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/system/printing/
Aps is a 'magic' filter systesm which uses the UNIX file(1) command to figure
out the contents of a file and then uses ghostscript, netpbm, and enscript to
format the output for a number of printers. The deskjet family is supported,
including color printing.
A lot of this stuff was either written or tuned for Linux, but it tends to be
very portable.
