We have an Alpha station 5/266 running DU 3.2C which won't boot. The
*reason* it won't boot is that for some reason the "clean" flag was
not set on the root file system: the boot then fails because it can't
read the kernel configuration file (sysconfigtab?). This has happened
before, and required a boot from CD and a fsck to fix. Unfortunately
there is only one boot CD for the whole university and it's difficult
to get rid of in a hurry.
Can anyone (a) suggest a way to get the system running in the absence
of a boot CD. (b) give a recipe for preventing this from happening
again. (ie will 3.2d-g fix it?)
sincerely
Keith Refson
