Q: Obliterating "part" of a disk label

Hello,

I have a disk here (root disk) that has it's h partition marked as
"LSMSimp". It was once part of an LSM disk group. I have removed LSM from
my system and would like to free that partition entry.

Is there a way to relabel a disk without destroying anything ? (My root fs,
swap and usr are on this disk) ? In fact all I want to do is to clear only
the label for the h partition. A DEC support engineer told me that if you
edit the disklabel, the only things that are accounted for when you write
the label are the sizes and the offsets you specify, he said that even if
you modify other things while in 'vi', disklabel just does not care.

Can I 'zero' a disklabel even if there are mounted filesystems on it ? I
could zero it and then relabel the disk with the correct type ? What
happens if you make a mistake and incorectly specify the sizes and offsets
of the partitions ?

Thanks
