joind problem

I am no more able to boot my Xterminals from my DU4.0B machine.

The logfile /usr/var/join/log is filled with the following lines:

DB is not writable: locked by another process
stop other process or remove the lock file /var/join/rwlock
DB is not writable: locked by another process
stop other process or remove the lock file /var/join/rwlock

As there is no joind currently running, I removed this file
and tried booting again. This worked last week, but did no more
help today.

I also changed the joind line in /etc/inetd.conf to include
debug information:

bootps dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/joind joind -d9 -l2

but I still get only the error messages above.
Any hints, ideas?

I suspect that the database files have been corrupted in /var/join
as is mentioned in the man pages. But I don't find a hint how
to check this assumption and how to correct the databases
in case they really are corrupted.

By the way, we only use joind as boot service, not for DHCP
