>From what I gathered immediate mode (overcommitment) is more predictable than
defered mode but immediate mode requires more disk space. Defered mode will
allocate memmory on a needs basis and when it runs out anything that accesses
memmory is "unceremoniously" killed. In immediate mode the memory is
allocated on a might need basis so you'll need more disk space and when you
run out of swap space the new process will return an error and existing
processes will run but slowly. Either way if you run out of swap you're in a
lot of hot water so to speak!
I guess if you take all the answers and put them together they all pretty much
say that if you have a lot of swap space (like we do) defered mode is faster
but immediate mode is safer yet slower.
Thanks!
