Hello,
I'm trying to get PPP working on a 3000/400 running OSF/1 v3.0. I retrieved
ppp-2.3b3 and it built OK. I modified the kernel files and rebuilt the kernel.
I then copied the supplied security etc files to /etc/ppp. When I tried to
start PPP I got a message saying "peer authentication is required". In the FAQ
it says that this is due to having a default route established - guilty as
charged and I would like it to remain that way. Of the possible solutions:
1. Arrange for peer to authenticate itself and create secrets files. Well I'm
not yet getting dialled out to get to a peer.
2. Peer refuses to authenticate and always uses same IP. Yes this is the one
for me! Tried adding the suggested line to secrets files and got a kernel panic
and reboot.
3. Remove auth from options file. Same kernel panic as 2.
So what am I doing wrong or missing?
The machine I am connecting is currently connected via SLIP but I need PPP for
connection to one of our clients. This machine is our dial up server and a
number of other jobs including main development server. It has an internal IP
number of 192.168.120.1 and a fixed external IP number on our ISPs network -
demon if that is of any use.
Obviously I can only work on this at odd times of the day as having our main
internal server crashing every few minutes is not acceptable. So I would like a
complete solution - if there is one.
Upgrading to a later version of the OS is also NOT an option, too expensive, too
time consuming...
All help gratefully received.
Bye
John
