X authority/ xauth not working... solaris compatibility?

Hello.
I seem to be having some problems with X authority files
granting access to Xterms on Solaris boxes (and perhaps others) .

At present I do the following:

xauth extract - ${DISPLAY} > filename

Then ftp the file over (rsh is disabled) and then:

xauth merge filename

Having done this I had thought (and the documentation seems to
support this) that I would now (without doing any sort of 'xhost' mumbo
jumbo) be able to start up X apps (assuming my display was set correctly)
from one system to the other. I tried the simplest one...xterm . no dice,
I get the following error:

Xlib: connection to "hostname:0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
Error: Can't open display: hostname:0.0

Has anyone gotten this to work as expected? If so how?

sorry if you're seeing this again. I noticed a similar question
when searching the archives...however there wasn't a summary in the archive.

Rest assured I'll send out a summary :-)

Thanks!
