quotas

I have never had to use quotas before and I hesitate about doing so now,
but I feel like I am running out of choices...

>From what I have been able to figure out, it appears that the only way to
implement quotas on accounts is to create a separate entry for each
individual login. Is this actually correct? It seems to me that the most
logical way to implement quotas would be to allow everyone in group
'students' to have the same amount. If I have special classes of users,
such as CS students, I would assign a different group to them, etc.

Is there any way of implementing quotas in this manner? Are there any
tools which make setting up quotas a reasonable endeavor?

Also, I am wondering how much overhead is involved in quota checking
(CPU and I/O time) and in quota tracking (file space).

The partition in question is an ADVFS volume if that affects the answer in
any way...

AdvTHANKSance,

Brad
