problem synopsis:
+++
I have a spare RZ29b that I want to put in my PC. I have an Adaptec ISA to
Fast-SCSI adapter that see the drive and identifies it as a DEC RZ29b
device and puts it on drive D:. But when I use the adapter bios to perform
media scanning of the drive it immediately reports back an error. Did DEC
does something to the drives to make it more/less than a Seagate Barracuda?
 Is my quest to use this drive on my PC doomed to fail? Or is the drive
dead?
---
Answer: DEC changes these drives to not spin up by default but to require
the START UNIT command from the controller. I can change a jumper setting
to make the drive spin at power up. There was also a discussion of drive
sector lengths and the fact that the Adaptec's don't like non-512 sectors
