The question:

> Ok, what's the trick? I've added sh=true and I've even and the damn

The answers:

>Try ":sh:" in your printcap instead of "sh=true".

Had tried this... didn't make any difference....

>Just a plain old "sh" in the printcap entry should work. Have you
>looked at the JetDirect card itself? They can generate the banner
>pages. If you haven't, wait until the printer's not busy, telnet to the
>thing, and take a look.

Had tried this too... but we're getting warmer... :-)

>That should be just ":sh:", it's a boolean toggle not a string
>variable.

Important hint on the boolean variables in printcap, IMHO...
the man page isn't very specific...

>You can telnet into the printer and change the setting there. But:
>you don't want to unless you have really recent firmware in the
>JetDirect card. There is some goofy bug that causes all sorts of
>things to break if you turn the banner page off on an HP. See the
>archives at http://www-archive.stanford.edu/lists/mlists.html; there
>was a good summary of the problems.

Give that man a cigar! That was it... also solved a problem
i was having with another jetdirect card. the knew there was
something in the card but I was using hpadmin up until i telneted
to it. The pointer to the archive should be heeded to, there's
a good rundown on possible problems this may create.

>Jim. It depends on the burst page. The JetDirect has a banner it throws
>on the end of a print job. It is 3 lines, and I can't remember the info
>it includes. To get rid of it, telnet to the JD card, and type ? to see
>the settings. banner:0 turns the JetDirect banner off. Type quit to
>quit and save the settings.

The syntax of how to do it... just an f/y/i...

Thanks to the list again.

Jim
