Hi all,
we have a few DEC Alpha 3000 which are usually backed up (using rdump) to
an exabyte on a SUN tape server running Solaris 2.5.
I have now started to upgrade these Alpha to OSF 4.0B.
Whit the new operatin system, when I try to rdump to the SUN machine I get
the following error:
# /usr/sbin/rdump -f apache:/dev/nrst4 /dev/rz3a
rdump: Dumping from host dylan
rdump: Date of this level 9 dump: Tue May 27 08:02:12 1997 GMT
rdump: Date of last level 0 dump: the start of the epoch
rdump: Dumping /dev/rrz3a (/) to /dev/nrst4 on host apache.esrin.esa.it
rdump: Mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
rdump: Mapping (Pass II) [directories]
rdump: Remote system is not known to be compatible for magtape functions, output
being treated as regular file
rdump: Estimate: 51894 tape blocks on disk
The available blocks(35157),is less than the estimated blocks(51894)
Dump is being aborted
rdump: SIGTERM received
rdump: The ENTIRE dump is aborted
Note that:
- With OSF 2.x I din't have any problem.
- With OSF 3.x I got the message "Remote system is not known to be compatible
for magtape functions, output being treated as regular file", but then the
rdump continued and worked OK.
- The estimate blocks (51894) is the real disk space to be dumped.
- The available blocks (35157) is the free space on the / partition of the
host to be dumped (!).
- I also tried to specify as dumpfile not a tape device, but a regular file
on a disk with a lot of space. It worked if I do the rdump to another
OSF Alpha, while I have exactly the same error if I rdump to a SUN.
Have you any idea ?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Paolo.
