? using serial console & graphics ports

i have a dec 4100 w/ the console set to "serial"
& the serial port hooked to a terminal server
& then going to pcm(vcs)

when i boot w/ a monitor attached to the graphics card
it displays that the machine is a 4100
but doesn't give any login prompts

is there a way i can also use the graphics port for logins
w/o setting the console back to "graphics"
