My original question asked what was involved in swapping out a 4/190 chip
for a 5/300.
Most people recommended going to the highest level of firmware -- a good
recommendation, always. Current firmware is at 3.9. You should also rebuild
the kernel, and I'm told that can be tricky. Martin Blomdahl gave me a
step-by-step, which I'll include here.
For what it is worth, we will have DEC coming out to replace the chip as per
our maintenance agreement, so I will rely on their expertise as well.
However, our local folks are more hardware and VMS software-oriented, so
this information will be extremely useful. Thanks again, all!

It's not so easy !
You have to replace the firmware totally !
And rebuild the kernel.
I had a DEC service rep to help me do it.
You can not run the standard firmware upgrade.
If you carefully read the firmware doc you can do it yourself.
But ... (it's your neck)
Steps.
1 Take down the system
2 Update the firmware
3 replace the cpu
4 boot genvmunix
5 build new kernel with the new cpu option
6 reboot
