Hi all,
I asked a question about how to login in single user mode because I got a
login prompt when boot our Alpha Station in single user mode and couldn't
get in with any valid login name.
It turns out that this is a false question. As all who responded pointed out,
what I saw is not a single user mode and a single user mode will not require
login. But why I can't boot to single user mode is still unclear. The most
common suggestion I got is to use "boot -flags s" or "boot -fl s" at >>>
prompt. That's exactly what I did and why I thought I was in single
user mode (My apology for not mentioning it in original email). Actually I
tried few combinations of boot flags and did see "INIT: SINGLE-USER MODE"
in the process of boot, but it always end up with a login prompt.
Anyway, our problem has been solved. The system crashed during the process
of coping an patched version libc.so to /shlib/libc.so (I guess I should
use mv instead of cp). Thanks to Christophe Colle's (<colle_at_krtkg1.rug.ac.be>)
suggestion, I boot from a cdrom and was able to mount the hardisk and fixed
the libc.so. Now our system back to normal.
Many thanks to all who kindly replied:
