Original problem:

In trying to use the floppy drive on a 3000/300x , I get the following error:

# fddisk -fmt /dev/rfd0a
Device driver for "/dev/rfd0a" missing.
...
...

The only advice that I got was that the h/w must be broken, both from our
intrepid Dr. Blinn and from one other person whose email is unfortunately
lost.

Fortunately for me that turned out not to be true. After updrading to 7.0
firmware and DU4.0b , the floppy drive now works.

The problem was probably some form of operator-headspace-misadjustment. (-:
