I downloaded the source and it compiles straight out of the box, with a
small change with one of the headers, /usr/include/io/cam/scsi_all.h.

It looks good to use, simple enough, but with enough nifty gadgets to
keep it interesting....

Try xmcd. There are two parts - X/Motif and Command line. It knows lots
of
CDROMs and, IMHO, best player. You can find it:
