SUMMARY: 3rd party graphics cards

Hello,

First, My apologies to the list for taking so long in summarizing
the responses.

It seems that an ATI board would be the best choice. The the 4.0b
release notes even mentions some things you need to do to get an
ATI board to work. It also seems that long ago DEC even shipped
some alpha systems with ATI boards installed.

However, all software MIGHT not support such a card. We will be using
the Open3D product from DEC and it looks like the ATI board is not
in the supported list. I've yet to investigate if Open3D will work
w/ ATI. For now I think we will go with the installed DEC board.

Many thanks to:

 Vahur Sinijarv <vahur_s_at_mv.parnu.ee>

Again, please accept my apologies for the late summary.

ATI Mach 64. You can pick them up anywhere pretty cheap.
These are one of the standard card that come w/ Alpha Workstations. If
you are not looking for high end graphics, this is the route I would
take (as an ex-FE for DEC).
I've never tried putting one in that didn't come from DEC, but I've
talked to many who have.

Hey Oscar,
I just spoke with one of our hardware guys who builds our 2100s
for us. He suggested finding out what type of card DEC puts
in the machine that you guys bought and then pricing it on the
open market. It should be cheaper. Also, ask about the PCI
graphics card that DEC puts into that machine and look that
one up on the open market rather than any EISA card. You may
want to ask DEC if the card off of the open market will work.

I'm using ATI Graphics Pro Turbo. Works fine with small drawbacks while
using it in text mode. But I'm using X, so everything is fine so far.
Don't know about 24-bit modes, I use 1024x768 256-color. Card costs
about 200$ here in Estonia.
