How to handle memory management!!!

        Hai all,

        Can somebody throw light on how to cope with
        memory ( and swap!! ) problems. the situation is:
        we have DEC 250 (alpha) machine .we are running CAD package
        UniGraphics(UG). very frequently we come across the message
        from UG that
         "Filed to save. Out of memory in Storage manager"
         but 'swapon -s ' command shows that more than 40% is free

         Can someone give any clue for this .
