recently we placed some calls to Digital concerning problems with scsi-drives.
Some of the advices/questions were to check the drive firmware version of our
RZ29Bs to be 0016.
Now we have more than hundred drives with version 0007 (few) and 0014 (mostly)
behind HSZ40/50
with HSOF V3.0 /V5.0 on DU 3.2d hosts.
The release notes to the HSZs state version 0007 as minimum. What about DU 4.0 ?
Do you have any opinions whether or not this upgrade is necessary? Any
expiriences?
We tested the upgrade procedure with HSUTIL and a .lod-File with two disks -
it worked well, all data seems to be untouched, but I would rather like to
avoid downtime of our systems.

SUMMARY:
Most answered that the pre-0016 versions are buggy
and that the upgrade to 0016 has to be done,
expecially if you are running RAID on the drives.

TRUST me upgrade all rz29's to 016 at least...you have no other option.
Your disks will sleep/timeout, go offline and work fine after recycle.
Think of the havok this does to AdvFS bitmaps and LSM meta data !!!
gotta do it Guy, sorry (upgrade your rz28's too)

When using hsutil, it is still possible to lose a disk. Do not
upgrade without backups... you can avoid backups if you are upgrading
raidsets (if the upgrade fails on one member, reconstruct the raidset
before continuing).

If the HSOF SPD says that a particular version is the minimum
required, you should be ok as long as you keep the disks behind
the HSZ. If you move the disks to be directly connect or make
the disks transportable, then you need to find out what firmware
version Digital UNIX prefers.
